About Us

Representation Matters Foundation

Representation Matters Foundation is a public and charitable non-profit 501(c)(3) company created to support the North Charleston, South Carolina surrounding areas with childhood literacy awareness. Research shows a strong connection between poor literacy, juvenile incarceration and violence. If we want safer communities, we should focus on increasing literacy skills. We at Representation Matters see childhood literacy as a form of violence prevention.

For the last 5 years we have given out free children’s books to the underserved areas of North Charleston, SC. We take a unique approach to childhood literacy by giving out books that either have characters of color or are written by authors of color so these children can see themselves in the books they read.

Our goal is to reach children within these communities and tackle topics on the importance of financial literacy, self-love, bullying, etc. These books will represent them, their communities, and hopefully light a flame that will bring to them a love for reading
